Is Flossing still Important?

February 8, 2017

In recent times there has actually been some controversy, is Flossing still important? Some professionals maintain that cleaning between teeth does nothing for overall oral health. However, the American Dental Association disagrees. They maintain that flossing actually cleans bio-particles that if left lodged between teeth will actually build into plaque in the long run. There are several other organizations that agree with them including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

According to these professionals, flossing once a day is the standard, preferably after every meal but at least once a day at night before you fall asleep. As a matter of fact, falling asleep overnight with the plaque in between your teeth is one of the main reasons that plaque will eventually harden into calculus or tartar. In the long run, this tartar can result into cavities and gum disease.

As far as cleaning in between teeth, you actually have several options. Traditionally, dental floss is the most common. You can also use a dental pick which is also made for the same purpose and is characterized as tiny brushes that reach between teeth. If high tech is your style, you might want to look into a water flosser. The targeted stream removes the plaque with a pressurized and pulsating action. This pulsating action also stimulates gum tissue for added health benefits. If Low Tech is more your speed, you might want to look into wooden plaque remover which is a simple flat wooden pick but just remember to be careful and avoid your gums. Always look for products that have the ADA- American Dental Association seal.
