Our patients sometimes ask:
“What is the difference between a regular cleaning, i.e. prophylaxis, and deep dental cleaning, i.e. scaling and root planning? And why do I need periodontal maintenance? It feels just like a regular cleaning.”
Those are good questions!
Here’s what you need to know about dental cleaning and maintenance to keep your oral health at its best.

In recent times there has actually been some controversy, is Flossing still important? Some professionals maintain that cleaning between teeth does nothing for overall oral health. However, the American Dental Association disagrees. They maintain that flossing actually cleans bio-particles that if left lodged between teeth will actually build into plaque in the long run. There are several other organizations that agree with them including the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
According to these professionals, flossing once a day is the standard, preferably after every meal but at least once a day at night before you fall asleep. As a matter of fact, falling asleep overnight with the plaque in between your teeth is one of the main reasons that plaque will eventually harden into calculus or tartar. In the long run, this tartar can result into cavities and gum disease.
